THE UNITED STATE OF AMERICA
The flag of the United States of America
The flag of the United States of America is called "The stars and Stripes". The thirteen striepes rapresent the thirteen original colonies and the fifty stars represent the fifty actual states.
The colours of the flag are blue for justice, red for courage and white for innocence.
American English is the first language and the second language is Spanish.
The currency is the American dollar.
Geography
The United States of America, in central North America, is the fourth largest country in the world.
The USA bordes Canada in the north and Mexico in the south.
There is an antartic climate in Alaska and subtropical climate in Florida.
There is Alaska on the north west of Canada and the Hawaiian islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Because the countryis so big, every state has different laws and tradutions and there are four different time zones.
The capital city is Washington DC.
Government
The United States is a Federal Republic of 50 states. The federal government is made up of the President who is the executive branch, Congress which is the legislative branch and th Supreme Court which is the judical brach. There is a presidental system of government.
The President:
_cannot be youngere than 35;
_must be a native born American;
_must be a resident of the USA for 14 years.
Congress makes laws and there are two parts to Congress:
_the House of Representatives (435 members elected for two yesrs );
_the Senate (100 mebers, two from each state, elected for six years).
The Statue of Liberty is a huge sculpture on Liberty Island in New York harbour. It was a gift to the USA from the people of France in thanks for the French American alliance during the American Revolution.
It is a statue of a woman whith the broken chains of tyranny at her feet.
Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue.
